In Canada (and in the United Kingdom, Barbados, Hong Kong, Australia, Bermuda, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and other former British colonies) we celebrate Boxing Day.
For me it means that I didn’t have to work on the 26th of this month, I got another day off after Christmas.
So this is what I did,
I love the fact that Nails Magazine gathers all this information regarding our industry and shares it with us.
Let your imagination run wild and create any style of nail art you can think of with as many or as few materials as you want following the special theme. Entries are on display for all show attendees to vote on to determine a winner: The Crowd Favourite! Entries are also automatically part of the Amore Mixed Media Judge category.
Let your imagination run wild and create any style of nail art you can think of with as many or as few materials as you want following the special theme. This is a judged category with specific feedback. Entries are also automatically part of the Akzentz Mixed Media crowd favourite category.
BLINGED! Challenges your competence, creativity and on-the-spot thinking. Mixing real-world salon problem solving skills in a fun competition environment, competitors will each receive identical mystery packages of Swarovski crystals and must use a minimum percentage of the crystals in their final BLINGED design. Think cooking show challenge, but for nails!

Designed to reflect Canada’s green image and friendly nature, the 3D Gel challenge requires competitors to sculpt 3D art on one hand following a specific theme using gels only.
These are quoted directly from their news letter so you may think you see spelling errors but there are just some differences in how us Canadians spell things!!! LOL
Here’s the kicker….and I am directing this to techs who want to get into competitions but are afraid. Either of the cost of competing or of not doing well.

First, the cost to compete in as many categories as you like is only $50!!!!! Yes, $50.00. The cost is so affordable that it makes perfect sense to join in. And, as for not doing well….I think that if you even attempt to enter, you have won. Competitions, whether in a setting like this or within a social media forum such as Facebook, push you to limits you didn’t know you had!
I can only encourage you to challenge yourself with these types of competitions. The rewards are far reaching. From pride of accomplishment to adding professional value to you as a employee!
Well, I did this event Sunday night and I needed my nails to be perfect, so I decided to try this trick.
I love Gel Play from Akzentz because it is a super highly pigmented. And it is very viscous. It stays where you put it (unless you have huge globs of it!) as you can see by my Palette. I travel with this palette and all the colors stay where they belong!
Since I needed such a little amount of color to cover up my minimal growth, I simply buffed down the edge with a 240 grit soft buffer, cleaned them, applied base coat and cured it, then using a synthetic gel brush applied one good coat of Akzentz Gel Play in Black.
And the final look worked out perfectly! You can’t even really tell that I did this little mini fill with Gel Play colored gel!
Another thank you to Akzentz for having great professional user products to help us stay looking professional!
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Elizabeth Morris (owner of Va Va Varnish in San Diego) creator and commentator behind The Nail Hub.
The beautiful Elizabeth Morris
The Nail Hub is a completely free Nail Industry Podcast put on by Elizabeth. She wants to share interviews with industry gurus, give business advice and expose you to quality products (including insider discounts!)
I connected with Elizabeth on the level that we both feel strongly about us professionals being educated and sharing our knowledge and passion for the industry. Also, to keep our industry standards at a high level so that we can show the world that we are professionals.
Keep a eye out for some collaboration between Elizabeth and myself in the future.
Here is Elizabeth’s nails that she wore to the IBS Las Vegas show this last weekend. She extended her nails with Akzentz Pro-Formance Hard Gel and then created this gorgeous nail art using Akzentz Gel Play! Her gems are Swarovski and held in place with Akzentz Bling On! This company has some bomb products!!!!
Nails by Elizabeth from Va Va Varnish using Akzentz Gel Play! Gorgeous!
I love the underside of her nails as well. So chic!
